Grockit steps beyond test prep: Learnist brings social learning to iPhone and iPad

Grockit has made a name for itself when it comes to social learning for online test preparation, but with Learnist the company is looking beyond just helping you with the SATs: Now you can learn almost anything with lessons prepared by teachers and experts using online media.

After launching Learnist on the web back in May for beta testers, today Grockit is releasing free Learnist iPhone and iPad apps, which will make the social learning service just about anywhere.

?I?ve been thinking in the past twelve months or so that everything you wanted to learn is online now,? Grockit founder and chief product officer Farbood Nivi told VentureBeat in an interview last week. ?The problem now is how do you make sense of the endless amount of video content online.?

He?s aiming to solve that problem with Learnist, which at first glance looks a lot like like a Pinterest for online learning. The Learnist website shares Pinterest?s square image board design, but instead of a collection of your favorite LOLcats, you?re presented with an array of lessons across topics like technology, food & drinks, and education. About 50 percent of the site?s content is education (including all of Grockit?s test prep curriculum), while the other half consists of more informal how-to guides.

?Almost every single one of our boards is better and more engaging than any textbook out there,? Nivi said. While textbooks can only devote a few pages to a particular lesson, Learnist lessons have no page limit, and they can include just about any piece of media floating around the web.

Learnist is fun to explore on the web, but it?s even more engrossing on the iPad and iPhone. Much like Wikipedia, it?s easier to sit back, relax, and fall down a rabbit hole of lessons. In addition to just viewing lessons, the apps let you build your own and share lessons with others.

Nivi says Learnist is solving five problems around social learning: It?s curating content, so it?s far easier to find lessons than just searching on Google; since most lessons are created by experts and teachers, they know how to sequence content to make learning easier; it lets you create a learning map, which helps to coordinate exactly how you approach a topic; it offers assessments, to make sure you truly understand the material; and finally, the site lets you social around any piece of information.

Since launching in May, Learnist has around 1,000 people who can create content, and they?ve added more than 20,000 different learning objects to the site. Nivi says a ?small army? of teachers also created learning boards for all 7th to 12th grade core subjects. It?ll be interesting to see if teachers actually start recommending Learnist to their students for studying (and perhaps even having students create lesson boards of their own).

?Learnist is so much more the vision I had for social learning than test prep was,? Nivi said. ?When we started [Grockit], it wasn?t possible to do Learnist ? the tech wasn?t there, the content, computing power, net speed ? none of those things were there. It?s only been in the past year that we?ve seen more [of those capabilities].?

San Francisco-based Grockit has raised around $25 million in funding so far from Atlas Venture, Benchmark Capital, Integral Capital Partners, and others.

There has been an influx in home owners purchasing a number of home improvements as those who were thinking about moving have been put off by the state of the housing market. With the housing market still recovering many people have tried to increase the value of their home so when the market does start to recover, they will be in a good position to sell. Many people have read different home improvement stories about how best to increase the value in your home but in order to ensure you are spending your money wisely you really need to analyse whether the home improvement you are going to buy is the right one for your home. There are many different ways of increasing the value of your home but not all of them are going to be right for your home. You need to talk to an expert first to get their opinion (this should not carry a cost as many companies will offer free consultation), they will be able to give you a number of options available. The main thing to think about is the style of your home and whether the improvement is going to match it. There have been many cases where a home owner has made a home improvement that should add thousands to the value but when it has been completed it looks out of place and the home owner ends up wasting all that money. One way of seeing how a home improvement may look is to look at your neighbours' homes and see if they have anything similar, that way you can see what yours may look like. If you have nothing to compare against, designers can give you an idea of how it will look. If you are having new doors and windows for example, you need to make sure that colours and styles match the rest of your home. You may need to choose a more traditional style if you have a traditional styled house or if you have a modern styled home, you can afford to be more adventurous about the colour and style. Matching your new home improvement with your home is extremely important in order to get the true benefits. If you are making the improvements to help you sell, make sure you choose something that buyers are going to appreciate and will get the benefits from in the long term such as energy saving doors and windows. Home improvements such as fire doors and stable doors are the best ways of increasing the value and style of your home.

New DNA-method tracks fish and whales in seawater

New DNA-method tracks fish and whales in seawater [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 30-Aug-2012

University of Copenhagen

Danish researchers at University of Copenhagen lead the way for future monitoring of marine biodiversity and resources. By using DNA traces in seawater samples to keep track of fish and whales in the oceans. A half litre of seawater can contain evidence of local fish and whale faunas and combat traditional fishing methods. Their results are now published in the international scientific journal PLOS ONE.

"The new DNA-method means that we can keep better track of life beneath the surface of the oceans around the world, and better monitor and protect ocean biodiversity and resources," says PhD student Philip Francis Thomsen from the Centre for GeoGenetics, Natural History Museum of Denmark, University of Copenhagen.

Marine ecosystems worldwide are under threat with many fish species and populations suffering from human over-exploitation, which greatly impacts global biodiversity, economy and human health. Today, marine fish are largely surveyed using selective and invasive methods mostly limited to commercial species, and restricted to areas with favourable conditions.

However, researchers at Centre for GeoGenetics now lead the way for future monitoring of marine biodiversity. They have shown that seawater contains DNA from animals such as fish and whales. The species leave behind a trace of DNA that reveals their presence in the ocean based on water samples of just half a litre.

The groundbreaking results are now published as two papers in the open access international scientific journal PLOS ONE.

From freshwater to seawater

The development of the novel DNA monitoring approach was accomplished by PhD student Philip Francis Thomsen and Master's student Jos Kielgast from the Centre for GeoGenetics headed by Professor Eske Willerslev. In December last year, they showed that small freshwater samples contain DNA from several different threatened animals, and after having published these results they began to focus on seawater. Here it also proved possible to obtain DNA directly from the water, which originated from local species living in the area.

"We analysed seawater samples specifically for fish DNA and we were very surprised when the results started to show up on the screen. We ended up with DNA from 15 different fish species in water samples of just a half litre. We found DNA from both small and large fish, as well as both common species and rare guests. Cod, herring, eel, plaice, pilchard and many more have all left a DNA trace in the seawater," says Philip Francis Thomsen.

In the other study the researchers showed that it is also possible to obtain DNA from harbour porpoise in small water samples taken in the sea, so the approach is not only limited to fish, but can also track large marine mammals.

A new and efficient method

The study also compares the new DNA method with existing methods traditionally used for monitoring fish such as trawl and pots. Here, the DNA method proved as good as or mostly better than existing methods. Moreover, the DNA method has a big advantage that it can be performed virtually anywhere without impacting the local habitat it just requires a sample of water. Associate Professor and fish expert Peter Rask Mller from the National History Museum of Denmark, who also participated in the study, is optimistic.

"The new DNA method has very interesting perspectives for monitoring marine fish. We always keep our eyes open for new methods to describe marine fish biodiversity in an efficient and standardised way. Here, I look very much forward to follow the DNA method in the future, and I think it could be very useful to employ in oceans around the world," says Peter Rask Mller.

The researchers also see great perspectives in the method for estimating fish stocks in the future.

Rover leaves tracks in Morse code

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? NASA's Curiosity rover took its first test stroll Wednesday Aug. 22, 2012, and beamed back pictures of its accomplishment in the form of track marks in the Martian soil. Careful inspection of the tracks reveals a unique, repeating pattern, which the rover can use as a visual reference to drive more accurately in barren terrain. The pattern is Morse code for JPL, the abbreviation for NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., where the rover was designed and built, and the mission is managed.

"The purpose of the pattern is to create features in the terrain that can be used to visually measure the precise distance between drives," said Matt Heverly, the lead rover driver for Curiosity at JPL.

This driving tool, called visual odometry, allows the rover to use images of landscape features to determine if it has traveled as far as predicted, or if its wheels have slipped. For example, when the rover drives on high slopes or across loose soil, it will routinely stop to check its progress. By measuring its distance relative to dozens of prominent features like pebbles or shadows on rocks -- or patterns in its tracks -- the rover can check how much its wheels may have slipped. If Curiosity has not slipped too much, it can then re-plan the next leg of its drive, taking its actual position into account.

"Visual odometry will enable Curiosity to drive more accurately even in high-slip terrains, aiding its science mission by reaching interesting targets in fewer sols, running slip checks to stop before getting too stuck, and enabling precise driving," said rover driver Mark Maimone, who led the development of the rover's autonomous driving software.

The Morse code imprinted on all six wheels will be particularly handy when the terrain is barren. Curiosity won't be able to read the Morse code symbols in the track marks directly, but it will note that the pattern is a high-contrast feature. This will give the rover the anchor it needs in an otherwise featureless terrain.

"Imagine standing in front of a picket fence, and then closing your eyes and shifting to the side. When you open your eyes, you wouldn't be able to tell how many pickets you passed. If you had one picket that was a different shape though, you could always use that picket as your reference," said Heverly. "With Curiosity, it's a similar problem in featureless terrain like sand dunes. The hole pattern in the wheels gives us one 'big picket' to look at."

NASA's Mars Exploration rovers Spirit and Opportunity also used visual odometry to ensure accurate driving in difficult terrains. Their wheels had been bolted to their landing platform, leaving holes that left distinguishing marks in their tracks. Those marks proved critical for the visual odometry system on Opportunity when it traversed the relatively featureless terrain at Meridian Planum. Opportunity is still trekking on Mars more than eight years after setting down on the Red Planet.

Curiosity likewise has holes in its wheels, only in the shape of Morse code letters.

"Even though Curiosity didn't need to be bolted down, we wanted to have the holes anyway. The mechanical team suggested multiple smaller holes rather than one large one like the Mars Exploration Rovers had, and one earlier design had spelled out letters in a cleat pattern, so I proposed using a Morse code version," said Maimone. "And the rest is history."

JPL manages the Mars Science Laboratory/Curiosity for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. The rover was designed, developed and assembled at JPL, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.

Why Hire an Aircraft Charter | ArticleBro.com

Aircraft Charter

In this day and age, where business transactions are done globally, the use of a private jet comes as no surprise. In fact, according to an online article by Gary Strauss from USA Today, company planes have surged since 2002 as personal flight options of CEOs. The swelling numbers indicate the diversified business transactions and the affordability of this flight choice for day to day business dealings.

Well, primarily because chartering a corporate jet for CEOs and other top class employees eliminates the added cost of paying on a per seat basis. The advantage to this kind of executive travel is that passengers experience the benefit to conduct business dealings during the flight. This is because it does away with the hassles of travelling with intrusive or unknown passengers that are present in most commercial airlines.

On top of that, all passengers are treated to a VIP service wherein they can sit back and relax. Every person aboard the business jet is provided with an utmost level of privacy and convenience. There are large and spacious cabins specially made for conducting meetings during the flight or for anyone who wants to rest adequately. And, if they need some luxurious accommodation, private flight attendants can dish up and serve scrumptious dinner and wine as per passenger request.

Air charters also offer the advantages of travelling according to the needs and requirements of every passenger. For instance, when you utilise aircraft charter services, there are no long lines at the ticket counter, limited baggage limits, and long layovers in crowded airports, delayed or cancelled flights. This is because you can choose when and where to depart from so this essentially gives you the advantage to schedule your flight according to your destination, when and where you want it.

In general, most companies prefer jet hire services because it provides more utility than commercial flight arrangements. First, you get to plan the exact details of your travel requirements: from the size of your aircraft, the number of passengers, how much luggage you can bring, as well as the travel and operating costs. Next, the aircraft can be made available in just a few hours after the booking.

Hence, even if you have a tight schedule to meet, you are guaranteed to arrive on time in maximum comfort and safety. Primarily because leasing an aircraft helps you get rid of public transportation discomforts. With a high level of service, that is made available to every passenger, the more that you should travel via jet plane for your business or leisure appointments.

New business and rising markets boost Kenya's Pan Africa

NAIROBI (Reuters) - Kenya's Pan Africa Insurance Holdings posted a 131 percent jump in first-half pretax profit, boosted by growth in new business and a higher valuation for its equity and bond portfolio, it said on Monday.

Controlled by South African insurer Sanlam, Pan Africa said it was optimistic for the second half of the year due to easing inflation, but was wary of political uncertainty and insecurity, which could slow Kenya's economic growth.

Interest rates in east Africa's biggest economy have dropped steadily, tracking inflation which has tumbled to 7.7 percent from a high of about 20 percent late last year, which lifted the insurer's income, the company said in a statement.

Pan Africa, which commands around 23 percent of the life cover business in the east African nation of 40 million people, said it made a first-half pretax profit of 220.5 million shillings.

Gross premium income rose by 75 percent to 3.2 billion shillings in the period to the end of June.

The company said its life insurance business was bolstered by the acquisition of a few bulk annuity schemes.

Earnings per share climbed to 2.27 shillings from 0.76 shillings in the same period last year. The company said it would not pay a dividend, in line with its policy.

The company's earnings were also lifted by the performance of its equity stakes on the Nairobi Securities Exchange where the main index is up 19.4 percent year to date.

"We expect this positive economic trend to continue in the second half of the year ... the risks to achieving this growth remain political uncertainty, insecurity and the financial crisis in Europe," it said in its statement.

96% The Imposter

All Critics (77) | Top Critics (22) | Fresh (74) | Rotten (3)

Beverly Dollarhide, Nicholas's mother, says of the period after her son's disappearance, "My main goal in life at that time was not to think." Apparently, the filmmakers have taken a cue from her.

Layton's dazzling film is an exciting, edge-of-your-seat experience superior to any Hollywood mystery you're likely to see for a long time.

"The Imposter" becomes more than just a missing-persons drama. It hints at something much darker: a real-life horror story, the full truth of which may never be known.

This is one creepy mystery.

"The Imposter" initially seems to be a tutorial in identity theft, as well as a cautionary tale about the susceptibility of people who have lost a loved one. But that's not the half of it.

Layton's film joins the top ranks of nonfiction films because he recognizes that in this case no solution could be as engrossing as the questions.

Incredibly well-made and with a story you won't forget, "The Imposter" is one of the better docs of the season.

The Imposter emerges as a brilliantly slippery film that demands brain-stretching consideration. Astonishing, indeed.

It's an astounding story, truly, and Bourdin is the most chillingly sympathetic sociopath: frank, remorseless, matter-of-fact.

British director Bart Layton has only slightly fictionalised this extraordinary story for his documentary, which is told more as a thriller than a statement of hard fact.

"The Imposter" is one of the best films of the year.

Not only is the story riveting, but the film explores huge issues that really get under our skin

The Imposter frequently sends your jaw hurtling to the floor as it tries to understand the great pretender and a family only too willing to accept him as one of their own.

When this film was over, I felt as if I had been holding my breath for 99 minutes. It is pure, delicious suspense.

The mysteries stick with you. In 20 years time, someone will leap up and shout, "Eureka!"

Think of Clint Eastwood's Changeling and multiply by the power of reality.

The month's second mind-blowing doc ... a thinker that deserves the thought.

[The] unbelievable blend of confidence trickery and seemingly wilful blindness is what fascinates most in The Imposter, and raises more tantalising and disturbing questions.

You couldn't make this stuff up - and no one would buy it as fiction. But as a documentary, it's a different matter.

Layton may be making a sophisticated point about the elusive nature of truth but at the same time, it's a point made at the expense of the Barclays.

The year's most fascinating and frightening doc so far, The Imposter delves far beneath the hysterical tabloid headlines.

It's both preposterous and horrific, and therein lies its powerful, disquieting charm.

The real imposter here is the director.

A fascinating glimpse into the mind of a cunning con-man...and it's just as cunning as he was in constructing the story to hold our interest.

Trails off at the worst possible moment...its flaccid legal summary and closing visual manipulations are intentional, leaving audiences with a thoroughly sickening feeling to appreciate Bourdin's prolonged dance of narcissism.

Top Items to Make Your Commercial Kitchen a Success ...

Last updated 13 hours ago

Commercial kitchens are unique in that they are generally used to prepare food for dozens, if not hundreds, of people at the same time. In order to help facilitate this feat day in and day out, restaurant and canteen kitchens require a set of special equipment. If you wish to be able to prepare food for the masses quickly and effectively, the following items are absolute must-haves for your commercial kitchen.

Appropriate Cabinetry

Every successful commercial kitchen is equipped with utensils, cookware, dishes, storage containers, and small appliances. To ensure that there is a place for everything in your kitchen, work with a restaurant equipment supply company to choose dish cabinets and wall cabinets designed for commercial kitchens.

A Functional Blender Station

Blending cocktails and preparing exotic smoothies without a high-quality blender is not an option when you have dozens of people to serve at once. A blender station gives you the space and the capacity you need to keep all drink ingredients within arm?s reach of your high-performance, volume-loaded blender.

A Central Work Table

Forget slicing and dicing vegetables and herbs on cutting boards that were made with residential kitchens in mind. When you cook in a commercial kitchen, you need space to spread out the ingredients you are cooking with. A handful of work table options exist, and a restaurant equipment specialist can help you identify which is best suited for your kitchen?s needs.

A Very Large Sink

Unless you want to make food preparation and dish clean-up in your kitchen a reoccurring nightmare, you need a sink with the capacity to hold all of your largest dishes. From a deep one-compartment sink with an attached drainboard to a four-compartment sink with multiple faucets, a restaurant equipment supplier can provide a sink that will help maximize efficiency and cleanliness in your commercial kitchen.

Are you a commercial kitchen owner in Atlanta, Charlotte, or Miami who is looking for the tools that will make your restaurant a success? HBT: O's Davis hits 3 HRs? |? Sabathia returns, wins

Chris Davis was further phased out of the Rangers? plans two years ago by the Adrian Beltre signing. Now an Oriole, he watched Wednesday as Beltre hit three homers against his club in a Rangers rout. Davis, though, didn?t take it lying down. He joined Beltre and became the ninth player this year to hit three homers a game Friday in Baltimore?s 6-4 win over Toronto.

Davis homered twice off starter Carlos Villanueva and once off Steve Delabar to up his season total to 23 homers. While he has an ugly 132/26 K/BB ratio in 402 at-bats, he has hit an adequate .256 and driven in 64 runs.

The Orioles gave Davis a look at third base after picking him up in last summer?s Koji Uehara deal, but they?ve kept him away from the hot corner this season. He?s started 38 games at first, 15 in right and 11 in left, while also doing plenty of DHing.

Of course, he also famously picked up a win in relief in a game against the Red Sox in which he went 0-for-8 as a hitter.

The Orioles don?t figure to bring back Mark Reynolds next year ? having both he and Davis in the lineup has altered wind patterns in the greater Baltimore area ? so Davis could wind up as the team?s primary first baseman. He?ll further enhance his case if he makes a run at 30 homers next month.

Eat Negative Calorie Foods and Lose Weigh

Yes! Negative calorie foods provide less energy than they require in the process of digestion.

We all know drinking plenty of water helps to lose weight, because one liter of water (0 calories) burns about 50 calories in the process of digestion. The good news is some foods have the same effect. The process of chewing and digesting them uses more calories than they contain ? there?s nothing left to store and even some of the stored fat gets used. Don?t get your hopes too high, though ? negative calorie foods are healthy foods, mostly fruits and vegetables, not desserts.

Water or negative calorie foods?

Water is the source of life, no question about that. Our bodies don?t function without it, but simply drinking water and calling that a diet doesn?t work. Why not? Because water doesn?t have any nutritional value. Regular water contains no fiber and no vitamins and minerals our bodies need, so a pure water diet simply ends in vitamin and mineral deficiency.

Low calorie foods, on the other hand, can be very nutritious. They give your body what it needs, make you feel full, but use plenty of calories in digestion ? thus forcing your body to use its reserves.

Nevertheless, you should be cautious ? Even vitamins, minerals and dietary fibre aren?t enough. Negative calorie diet must be combined with proteins and other nutrients from the major food groups.

Fact or fiction?
?Negative calories? is a catchy phrase, often used by big food companies. They advertise negative calorie foods and drinks, but in fact have no evidence to support their claim as there was no research done. And sometimes ?negative calories? means their foods and (especially) drinks contain additives which boost metabolism ? like caffeine, L-Carnitine and so on. In 2007, even Coca-Cola and Nestle had to pay a fine for advertising their tea as a ?negative calories? drink!

Negative calorie foods list?

Here?s a list of foods you should have for snack or make for dinner to lose weight ? but you have to eat it raw or slightly cooked ? with nothing on them!

Vegetables:
  • Asparagus
  • Beet
  • Broccoli
  • Cabbage
  • Carrot
  • Cauliflower
  • Celery
  • Chicory
  • Hot Chilly
  • Cucumber
  • Garden cress
  • Garlic
  • Green beans
  • Endive
  • Lettuce
  • Onion
  • Radish
  • Spinach
  • Turnip
  • Zucchini
Fruits:
  • Apple
  • Blueberries
  • Cantaloupe
  • Cranberry
  • Grapefruit
  • Honeydew
  • Lemon
  • Lime
  • Mango
  • Orange
  • Papaya
  • Peach
  • Pineapple
  • Raspberry
  • Strawberry
  • Tomato
  • Tangerine
  • Watermelon
  • .
  • .

Make it work!
Knowing you can burn 50 calories with a liter of water or 25 calories with some broccoli sounds great, but reality is, it won?t help you lose weight, unless you make an effort. Our bodies burn 60 calories per hour while sleeping, so eating negative calorie foods won?t make a difference, unless you combine such diet with plenty of exercise.

Make it a rule: drink plenty of water, eat negative calorie foods and work out!

In Montana Senate race, the personal and the partisan collide

BILLINGS, Montana (Reuters) - Jon Tester, the Montana senator whose surprise 3,500-vote victory in 2006 tipped the chamber to the Democrats, would seem to have a lot going for him as he seeks reelection this fall.

A working farmer from a tiny town in the state's hard-scrabble agricultural heartland, he's widely regarded as a good and honest man ? traits that many Montana voters, deeply cynical about national politics, say they value above all else.

The state's economy is comparatively healthy, thanks largely to an energy boom. Its large senior population is historically hostile to the sort of changes in Medicare that are at the center of the Republican agenda.

But Republicans have been gunning for Tester from the day he was elected, and today the Democrat is locked in a bitter, neck-and-neck contest in which a few thousand voters could once again determine which party controls the 100-seat U.S. Senate, where Republicans need a net gain of four seats to take charge.

Denny Rehberg, Tester's opponent, is also an incumbent, having held the state's lone house seat for six terms. Affable on the surface but combative in the political trenches, he hails from an old ranching family, and while the main thing now growing on the 6,000-acre Rehberg spread near Billings is an upscale subdivision, he still claims some invaluable cowboy credibility.

Rehberg, and the national Republican operatives who have poured millions into the race, aim to turn the contest into a referendum on Democratic President Barack Obama. The President and his health care overhaul in particular, are not popular in a state where practicality, self-reliance and fiscal conservatism are often seen as one in the same.

"I don't like socialism," said Roberta Edwards, who farms wheat with her husband and runs an antique shop in Big Sandy, Tester's home town. A thoughtful woman, she likes Tester and his family, whom she knows well. She even acknowledges that her own family benefits from federal farm subsidies ? but nonetheless finds herself fiercely opposed to what she sees as a Democratic belief that government social programs can substitute for hard work and perseverance.

Tester goes to great lengths to distance himself from Obama, running ads that specify his opposition to the president on issues such as the Keystone XL pipeline and the bank and auto bailouts.

"We have to run our own race," Tester said in an interview while he visited a YWCA in Billings.

Running against Washington is a time-honored strategy in Montana, and interviews with voters around the state reveal visceral and widespread disgust with inside-the-beltway politics. Yet with the influx of outside money - mainly to fund attack ads that voters also say they hate - it can almost seem that Washington is running against Montana, forcing the brutal partisanship of national politics onto an electorate that would prefer to keep it local, and personal.

REVENGE OF THE RESOURCE ECONOMY

A railroad, rather than a river, runs through downtown Billings, the state's largest city. But shiny restaurants and trendy brew pubs dot the streets, reflecting new-found wealth from the oil and gas boom in northeastern Montana and neighboring North Dakota.

Until recently that kind of street scene existed only in the Western part of the state, where telecommuters and second-home buyers fed a robust "amenity economy" in charming mountain towns like Missoula and Bozeman. For a time, a political shift appeared to be in the offing, with urban newcomers adding a blue streak to a rural state where libertarianism and anti-corporate populism have long bounded the political landscape.

Now while Western Montana struggles with the fall-out from real estate bust, the resource economy is boosting the central and eastern parts of the state ? and resetting the political balance accordingly.

"Energy is doing very well, agriculture is huge, the economy is doing very well," said Bill Dutcher, general manager of the MetraPark event complex in Billings, as he surveyed the activity at the Montana State Fair one recent afternoon.

Tester, 56, was making the rounds, sampling barbecued ribs and chatting with local artisans and merchants. He later joined a small group of veterans at the county courthouse to honor wounded servicemen who had earned a Purple Heart. Montana has one of the highest rates of military enlistment in the country, and Tester has made veterans affairs a signature issue.

At his next stop, a YWCA that serves as a shelter for battered women, Tester stressed his commitment to women's health issues, another pillar of his campaign in a year when Republicans are seen as out of touch on the topic.

"Programs like this are pretty darn important," he said. Tester supported Obama's healthcare law, though he doesn't talk about it much.

MILITARY POLITICS

Rehberg, also 56, is a party-line Republican in many respects, though he did earn the ire of the Wall Street Journal's editorial page by voting against vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan's budget.

In an interview, Rehberg said he did not necessarily oppose an overhaul of Medicare, the government health insurance plan for the elderly, that's a key element of Ryan's plan. But he called for more discussion: "If you don't have a bottom-up approach with buy-in from seniors, you may destroy the opportunity."

Rehberg touts his achievements as a budget-cutter on the House Appropriations Committee, citing savings of $20 billion on the Pell Grant college scholarship program as an example.

On a recent campaign swing in Great Falls, Rehberg was joined by Arizona Senator John McCain to show his support for the military. At a visit to a small family business that provides supplies to military bases, the discussion quickly turned to "sequestration," the automatic budget cuts that kick in if Congress can't reach an agreement on deficit reduction.

"We cannot take a trillion-dollar reduction over 10 years," Rehberg said, referring to the defense budget. He also criticized the latest START treaty, a nuclear arms control deal with Russia that has considerable bi-partisan support; Great Falls' Malmstrom Air Force Base is a major command for the intercontinental ballistic missiles.

"We have a president who is unilaterally disarming us," said Rehberg. "This is not just about the economy of Great Falls."

ATTACK ADS EVERYWHERE

Montana, with a population of just a million, is a "cheap date" for national political groups; TV airtime just isn't very expensive. Tester has raised more money than Rehberg ? about $9.4 million as of June 30, versus $5.7 million for his challenger ? but spending by independent groups such as Karl Rove's Crossroads GPS has more than made up the difference, according to David Parker, a Montana State University professor.

Parker said 14 different outside groups have spent money in Montana. Anti-Tester ads paint the senator as Obama's water boy. Anti-Rehberg ads portray the congressman as a rich guy who is "out for himself."

"What this money does do is it sets the terms of the debate very clearly for voters," said Parker.

More narrowly targeted ads also take swipes at Rehberg's record on the environment, Tester's vote on credit card fees, and the Supreme Court decision that permitted unfettered corporate advertising the first place.

Rehberg also faces criticism among some voters for his involvement in a serious boating accident three years ago that left one of his aids with a brain injury. Rehberg was a passenger on the boat and, like the driver, had been drinking before the wreck.

Tester, for his part, has disappointed some allies on the left with his centrist positions.

Oddly enough, what may be the most important local issue that's directly in the hands of the federal government ? public lands policy ? is rarely mentioned in the campaign.

Tester had tried, shortly after his election, to broker a "grand bargain" among environmentalists, ranchers, loggers and others to end a decades-long war over forest management. His legislation, which enjoyed the support of many one-time antagonists, would have established new wilderness areas while also guaranteeing the timber harvest.

Rehberg calls it "a highly flawed proposal." But Tester, with some bitterness, accuses Rehberg of deliberately sandbagging the effort for political gain.

"He's been running for this seat for six years," Tester says.

Business Consulting | For internal consultants: 1 fixed monthly ...

Before to get you in this endeavor, you need to decide first of all whether you are a independent or salesperson will want in the House. Both have benefits and you must weigh first it disadvantages, so you can make well informed decision. For internal consultants:

Keep Your Kids Out Of Day Care! Get A Home Business | How To ...

However, a home business need not be a far-off dream. You can start your own business with some knowledge and research. You?ll find some great suggestions in this article, if you want to start your own home-based business.

Create a work schedule which you stick to. Putting limits on the amount of time you intend to work will keep you from exhausting yourself. While putting in long hours at work is sometimes required, you should not make this a regular occurrence. Designated family time should be a work-free zone to aid in cutting down the stress levels.

Search Engine Optimization

When you set up your home business, take some time to find out about the going rates charged by similar businesses in your area. Establish what your rates and fees will be using this information. Don?t be afraid to charge an appropriate value for your services.

TIP! Keep a good record of daily spending and other expenses that have a financial impact on your home business. This will clear up any problems with your tax deductions when filing taxes, or if you happen to be audited.

Search engine optimization can be used to increase the visibility of your home business on the Internet. SEO, or search engine optimization, can help you market your online business and build a better online presence. You can hire someone to help you with your SEO, or you can research it and find out how to do it yourself.

If some people are still using old-fashioned checks to buy your products, deposit them immediately after receiving them. If you?re currently waiting to deposit your money at the bank, you should instead do it more frequently. The shorter period of time you leave a check sitting on your desk, the shorter the time you have to misplace it. Don?t rely on ATM machines for your deposits. Putting your money directly into the hands of a teller will ensure that there are less chances for errors.

Make sure that your home business has an objective or mission statement. This should include a short description of what you do in your business. Be sure to keep this idea in mind, especially when you talk to someone about your company. This will be impressive to potential customers because it will demonstrate your confidence and knowledge.

Consult a lawyer who specializes in business matters before you start up a business of your own. Many states have laws pertaining to home businesses. Taking time to talk to a business lawyer will help you figure out what steps you have to take in order to operate your business by the books.

TIP! Anytime you provide a service for others, use a contract. To ensure that you are legally protected if something goes wrong, you should sign a contract that will outline all expectations.

Seek comments and reviews about people perceive your business, products, and website. If you own a business you need feedback, so search online, ask friends, family and customers, and consider holding focus groups. Whether you are getting positive or negative feedback, either will help you on your way to a successful enterprise.

When you operate a business from your home, you?re going to be getting a great deal of phone calls. Think about getting a phone line for your business. By having an additional phone, you?ll be able to silence it when you aren?t available.

When you are ?knee-deep? in work, inform your friends and loved ones so that you are not bothered at that time. If there?s someone in your life that shows up early a lot, kindly let them know you?re working. You may need to shut your phone off, or stop answering the door to get the point across.

If you have a home business, you may want to hire an accountant when tax season arrives. Taxes can be a very complex process when you?re a home business owner, and the time you?d spend doing them properly is time better spent on your business.

TIP! When selecting a brand name, choose one that means something to both you and the customer. An easily identifiable name allows customers to quickly link your products and services with the value associated with your brand.

Search Engine

It is a fact of life that search engine optimization is essential to giving your home business website higher Internet search rankings. This is the best way to ensure that your website is reaching the largest possible audience. See how the top ranking sites are using SEO to improve their search engine results.

If you run a home daycare, you need to make sure that you have enough help to properly care for all of the children. Without sufficient staff, you will have difficulty caring for the children properly and providing for their basic needs, such as making sure they eat, take a nap, behave appropriately and other basic tasks.

Make an email address, mailing address and telephone number available for your customers to reach you. Make note of who contacts you directly to see if these people are generally the ones that end up buying your products. Your reply could have influenced their choices: research what worked for you and repeat the process.

TIP! One of the most important considerations when you are running a business from your home is to make the most of deductions you are allowed to claim for the business. Look for and claim every deduction that you can, and enjoy a significantly lower tax bill.

It can be easy to let your clients skate by when it comes to paying on time, especially when you are also trying to build relationships with them. However, you have to keep in mind that this can have a huge effect on your bottom line. Establish clear payment terms on all invoices and documents, including a reasonable penalty (start with eight percent) over the invoice amount, if the total is not paid within the standard payment terms.

It is important that you do not get your hopes up with business programs that promise quick success. A home business does not enjoy overnight success; it takes time. Have patience and a long-term mindset, and keep moving your business ahead toward success.

If you ask for outside investment, be prepared to answer lots of questions about how your business operates. Try to get the best results from the money you currently have available.

Make additional profits through a product or service offering that charges a membership fee. Subscriptions can generate recurring income flows and for most sites, it is pretty simple to implement.

TIP! Working from home in your pajamas is as fun as it sounds, but don?t be surprised if you end up missing that human interaction that you can only get from being out and about in the workplace. To keep from getting too lonely, try to get out of the house at least several times a week.

All businesses should have an emergency fund. Then you are prepared for all sorts of unexpected turns. However, be careful not to use your emergency funds unless it is truly an emergency. Replenish the fund as soon as you can.

Locate your customers and find ways to reach them. You can use the Internet, as well as word of mouth to create more interest in your business. Most communities have events like festivals or craft fairs where you could rent a booth and reach the public directly.

Working from home provides plenty of comfortable benefits, but it also provides an atmosphere that could lead to you getting more easily burned out. Set aside time each day that is devoted to your social life and your family, not working.

When running a home business it is important that you are always totally realistic and honest with yourself in regards to your expectations. Do you think that your product is good enough to gather the interest needed? Can you be an ethical and responsible businessperson in the business you are looking into?

TIP! Get involved with a home business online community. These forums will let you collaborate with others in a similar situation.

As was previously mentioned, many people desire to start their home-based businesses. Starting your home business may be hard if you don?t understand how to succeed with it
